Cells & Chem (Generalized Cell)
- Centresome:
* Assists in formation/organization of microtubules
* Responsible for spindle formation during mitosis - Cilium: helps with motion
- Endocytic vesicle: moves particles/fluid/molecules through plasma membrane
- Free ribosome: site of cytoplasmic protein synthesis
- Golgi apparatus: modifies/packages/sorts newly synthesized proteins
- Lysosome: digests macromolecules/microorganisms/old or damaged organelles
- Microvilli: increases cell surface area and helps transport/absorption across membrane
- Mitochondrion:
* powerhouse of cell bitch!
* synthesizes ATP - Nuclear pore: allows passage of materials b/w cytoplasm and nucleus
- Nucleolus: inside nucleus, RNA synthesis and ribosome assembly
- Nucleus: DNA replication and conversion into mRNA
- Peroxisome: in cytoplasm, breakdown of hydrogen peroxide and fatty acid
- Plasma membrane:
* encloses cell
* communication
* intercell connections
* regulates mvmnt of materials in/out of cell - Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER): synthesizes protein for use inside cell
- Secretory vesicle of Golgi apparatus: Carries protein products from Golgi apparatus to cell surface for exocytosis
- Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SEM):
* synthesizes lipids
* detoxes drugs and alcohol
* metabolizes carbs
* stores calcium
