Cells & Chem (Generalized Cell)

  • Centresome:
      * Assists in formation/organization of microtubules
      * Responsible for spindle formation during mitosis
  • Cilium: helps with motion
  • Endocytic vesicle: moves particles/fluid/molecules through plasma membrane
  • Free ribosome: site of cytoplasmic protein synthesis
  • Golgi apparatus: modifies/packages/sorts newly synthesized proteins
  • Lysosome: digests macromolecules/microorganisms/old or damaged organelles
  • Microvilli: increases cell surface area and helps transport/absorption across membrane
  • Mitochondrion:
      * powerhouse of cell bitch!
      * synthesizes ATP
  • Nuclear pore: allows passage of materials b/w cytoplasm and nucleus
  • Nucleolus: inside nucleus, RNA synthesis and ribosome assembly
  • Nucleus: DNA replication and conversion into mRNA
  • Peroxisome: in cytoplasm, breakdown of hydrogen peroxide and fatty acid
  • Plasma membrane:
      * encloses cell
      * communication
      * intercell connections
      * regulates mvmnt of materials in/out of cell
  • Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER): synthesizes protein for use inside cell
  • Secretory vesicle of Golgi apparatus: Carries protein products from Golgi apparatus to cell surface for exocytosis
  • Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SEM):
      * synthesizes lipids
      * detoxes drugs and alcohol
      * metabolizes carbs
      * stores calcium
