sorrowful mysteries
The Sorrowful mysteries encourage Catholics who are suffering to remember that God understands what it is to suffer since He experienced great pain at death through Jesus
1 st Sorrowful Mystery – The Agony of Jesus in the Garden
→ As seen within the Gospel, Jesus went to Gethsemane and prayed as he is sorrowful and troubled; “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death” (Mt. 26)
→ CCC describes this as “the ultimate struggle of his agony”

→ Jesus is taken by Pilate and scourged; being tied to a pillar and beaten as the soldiers “struck him with their hands” (Jn. 19)
3 rd Sorrowful Mystery – Jesus is Crowned with thorns. During his scourging, the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns and placed it on Jesus’s head; declaring him mockingly “King of the Jews”
4 th Sorrowful Mystery – Jesus Carried the Cross
5 th Sorrowful Mystery – The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ
→ Crucifixion sees Jesus suffer and die on the Cross - he “died for our sins” CCC; showing the ultimate love as he calls for the forgiveness of humankind “for they know not what they do” (Lk 23)
