/a͜ ʊ/ Diphthong

  • Distinctive Features: Low front to high back.

  • Tongue Position:

    • Moves from low front on /a/ to high back for /ʊ/.

  • Lip Position: Neutral to slightly rounded.

  • Voicing: Voiced, VP port closed.

  • Orthographic Variations: ou, ow.

  • Occurrence: All word positions.

Distinguishing Between /ɪ/ and /aʊ/

/ɔ͜ ɪ/ Diphthong

  • Distinctive Features: Mid-back to high front.

  • Tongue Position: Glides from lower mid-back on /ɔ/ to high front /ɪ/.

  • Lip Position: Slightly rounded to slightly retracted.

  • Voicing: Voiced, VP port closed.

  • Orthographic Variations: oi, oy.

  • Occurrence: All word positions; sometimes transcribed as /o͜ ɪ/.

/e͜ ɪ/ Diphthong

  • Distinctive Features: Mid-front to high front.

  • Tongue Position: Rises from mid-front of /e/ to high front of /ɪ/.

  • Lip Position: Unrounded.

  • Voicing: Voiced, VP port closed.

  • Orthographic Variations: a, ei, a-e, eigh, ai, ea, ay, ey.

  • Occurrence: All word positions.

/o͜ ʊ/ Diphthong

  • Distinctive Features: Mid-back to high back.

  • Tongue Position: Rises from mid-back of /o/ to high front of /ʊ/.

  • Lip Position: Rounded throughout production.

  • Voicing: Voiced, VP port closed.

  • Orthographic Variations: o, o-e, oe, oa, ow.

  • Occurrence: All word positions.
