Lab Objectives:

  • Measuring diffusion of iodine and osmosis of water in an artificial system (dialysis bag)

  • Measuring osmosis of water in natural membrane system (potato cell)

Background

  • Diffusion - movement of solutes through a semipermeable membrane down a concentration gradient.

  • Osmosis - passive movement of water through a semipermeable membrane down it’s concentration gradient
