Regular Preterite Verbs

• The past tense is often used with key words:
  • Ayer (yesterday)
  • Anoche (last night)
  • Durante el verano/invierno (during the summer/winter)
  • La semana pasada (last week)
  • El año pasado (last year)
  • El otro día (the other day)
  • Hace 3 semanas (3 weeks ago)

Regular Preterite Endings

• Verbs ending with “AR”:
  • -é, -amos
  • -aste, -asteis
  • -ó, -aron
• Verbs ending with “ER/IR”:
  • -í, -imos
  • -iste, -isteis
  • -ió, -ieron

Conjugation Examples

• Hablar: Hablé, Hablamos, Hablaste, Hablasteis, Habló, Hablaron
• Comer: Comí, Comimos, Comiste, Comisteis, Comió, Comieron
• Vivir: Viví, Vivimos, Viviste, Vivisteis, Vivió, Vivieron

Verbs Ending in -CAR, -GAR, -ZAR

• These verbs have a spelling change in the first person (yo form).
• -CAR verbs (c → qu): Tocar, Buscar, Sacar
• -GAR verbs (g → gu): Entregar, Pagar, Jugar (stem "JUG" does NOT change in the preterite)
• -ZAR verbs (z → c): Almorzar, Empezar (stems "ALMORZ" and "EMPEZ" do NOT change in the preterite)
