The Expansion of New England
^^Growing Religious Dissent^^
- Many people who came to Massachusetts didn’t want to become super religious, so they left to create their own settlements which helped with expansion
- The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut were created by the town of Hartford which was established by Thomas Hooker who disagreed with the current government system
- Connecticut was created when New Haven and Hartford were combined
==Rodger Williams==
- Williams felt that Massachusetts Church should abandon the Church of England
- After banishment, Williams created Rhode Island, where there was religious freedom

- Anne Hutchinson claimed that all the ministries in Massachusetts were not eligible for office since they hadn’t gone through a conversion process
- She also challenged the role of women in the Puritan society
- Anne and her followers ended up moving to Rhode Island

- Captain John Mason and Sir Fernando spit the land along the Piscataqua River with a grant from the Council of New England
- Many groups of Puritans ended up moving out to New Hampshire
Settlers and Natives

- The Natives helped the settlers with growing crops and were trading partners for fur and manufactured goods
- However, the colonists wanted land which caused conflicts with the Natives

- The settlers often assaulted the Natives, causing tensions to become even stronger
- Puritans saw them as “savages” and felt that they needed to be rid of
- Food shortages and diseases caused chaos and confusion among the Natives
The Pequot War, King Philip’s War, and the Technology of Battle
==The Pequot Wat==
- English settlers, in a war with the Pequot Natives, burned a stronghold causing the death of most of the tribe; those who lived were sold as slaves

- The leader of the Wampanoags was threatened by the English, causing him to gather firearms against them
- Eventually, the Wampanoags were defeated
- The French started to help other tribes fight against the English

- The exchange of weapons made the conflict with Natives even worse as Natives managed to purchase weapons and learned how to use them
- Though they did this along with the combination of their own warfare tactics, they were still defeated in the end
