Breast biopsy

  • anesthesia: local with moderate sudation or general with intubation

  • Postioned suppine

  • prep- including wire prep with betadine, chloaprep or dynahex

  • breast side down edge of table shoulder upper arm extended to unaffected breast include neck

  • wire is places per-op

  • SA- counter traction using army navy or goelet

  • specimen manipulated with lahey tanaculum

  • bleeders carterized

  • metz, curved mayos, or bovieused for dissection

  • specimen sent to radiology for memmography

  • bovie bleeders

  • close with 4-0 suture

    Post-op Care

  • dressing- steri strips for 7-10 days

  • no bathing for 1-2 days

  • pain may require medication

  • seek medical attention for SOB, chest pain, blood clotts in legs

    Complications

  • fever 101* or higher, bleeding drainage or puss, chills, inflammation or swelling, worsening pain, increased breast size
