Climate Control Factors

What is the difference between weather and climate?

The weather is what’s happening right now outside but climate is what is the average for the region for an extended time.

List and explain the factors that affect climate.

Elevation
Latitude
Ocean Currents
Proximity to oceans
Wind and Air masses

Which of the factors affect Guelph’s climate?  Vancouver’s climate?

Vancouver has a maritime climate affected by winds and ocean currents well being right beside the ocean. This helps regulate the temperature year round. Guelph has a Continental Environment which doesn’t have any major water nearby. Latitude also has a big effect on Guelph.

Explain the differences between a continental and maritime environment.

Continental is normally more extreme because there isn’t much to regulate it whereas the maritime environment is regulated by the ocean and normally receives more precipitation because of that.

The Hydrologic Cycle

Move a drop of water from soil, through the following locations, and back to soil.  You must use all locations at least once.  You can use them more than once if needed.

CloudOceanPea shoot (like we grew in class)Speed River
First the drop of water would flow from the Speed River into the Ocean. Then it would evaporate into a cloud that would fill up with lots of water where it could then rain onto the Pea shoot which would use it and eventually be passed into the soil.

A warmer earth can disrupt the water cycle. Which of the above locations would be disrupted as the oceans warm?  Explain.

Everything above would be disrupted. The clouds would start to rain/snow more which would in turn over water the pea shoots more which can kill them off. The Speed River could get flooded from all the extra water and the Ocean would become more stormy as well. There are also natural disasters like Hurricanes which fuel off of the warm ocean with lots of precipitation.

Climate Change & The Carbon Cycle

Which gasses are the main cause of global climate change?  Where do they come  from?

Carbon Dioxide - Mainly comes from human’s burning fossil fuels. Cars, creating electricity, heating
Methan - Mainly from live stock natural processes
Nitrous Oxide - Mainly from Industry and rice farms.

Where can carbon be stored in the environment?  (Think of Carbon Sinks)

Carbon can be stored in most plants but trees do a good job at it. Considering how they last for more than 50 years and how much they soak up, it is no surprise they store a host of our carbon emissions.

Move an atom of carbon from the atmosphere, through the following locations, and back to the atmosphere.  You must use all locations at least once.  You can use them more than once if needed.

A warmer earth can disrupt the water cycle.  Which of the above locations would be disrupted?  Explain.

How are different areas in Canada likely to be affected by global climate change?  You may refer to current events.

We already know many climate change solutions.  What action can we take to minimize the impacts of climate change?
