Leadership: Definition
Leadership is the ability to influence, lead, or guide others so as to accomplish a mission in the desired manner by providing purpose (why), direction (knowledge), and motivation (will).
Leadership Traits
Key traits include: Justice, Endurance, Dependability, Decisiveness, Judgment, Enthusiasm, Bearing, Tact, Selflessness, Courage (Physical and Moral), Knowledge, Initiative, Integrity, Humor & Humility, Loyalty.
Introduction to JROTC
JROTC is a CHARACTER and LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. It was established by the National Defense Act of 1916. The key to success in JROTC is Teamwork. The 2 ways to become a US Citizen are: Birth and Naturalization (14^{\mathrm{th}} amendment - 1868). The 3 parts of the US Constitution are: 1 Preamble, 7 Articles, and 27 Amendments. The first 10 amendments are the Bill of Rights. Freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment are: Religion, Assembly, Press, Petition, and Speech. The 3 standard US flags are: Garrison (ceremonial), Post (daily), and Storm (bad weather). The Star-Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812 (adopted 1931). Basic citizen responsibilities: Obey laws, pay taxes, attend school, and vote.
Leadership Theory and Application
The two basic responsibilities of a leader are Mission and People. The three styles of leadership are Directing, Participating, and Delegating. The seven values that leaders and followers possess are LDRSHIP: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. Management is the process of planning, organizing, coordinating, directing and controlling resources such as people, material, time, and money in order to accomplish a mission. Attributes of a leader are CHARACTER, PRESENCE, and INTELLECT. The 11 Principles of Leadership are:
Know yourself and seek self-improvement.
Be technically and tactically proficient.
Know your subordinates and look out for their welfare.
Keep your subordinates informed.
Set the example.
Ensure the task is understood, supervised, and accomplished.
Train your subordinates as a team.
Make sound and timely decisions.
Develop a sense of responsibility among your subordinates.
Employ your command in accordance with its capabilities.
Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions.
Application of Leadership in Drill
Drill is covered in Training Circular (TC) 3{-}21.5 Drill and Ceremonies. Drill develops: Discipline, self-confidence, teamwork, personal pride, unit pride, and organization. Most drill commands have 2 parts: Preparatory command (what) and command of execution (when).
