Definition: The breakdown of large insoluble food compounds into smaller, water-soluble components for absorption into blood plasma.
Phases of Digestion:
Ingestion: Intake of food through the mouth.
Movement: Transportation through the digestive tract.
Mechanical and Chemical Digestion: Physical breakdown (chewing) and chemical breakdown (enzymes).
Absorption: Nutrients passing through the intestinal walls into the bloodstream.
Elimination: Removal of waste products from the body.
Macromolecules in Food
Types of Macromolecules:
Proteins: Broken into amino acids.
Fats: Reduced to fatty acids and glycerol.
Carbohydrates: Converted to simple sugars.
Additional Absorption: Important minerals, vitamins, and water are extracted during digestion.
Food Sources Classification
Herbivores: Plants (e.g., cows, horses).
Carnivores: Meat (e.g., cats, wolves).
Omnivores: Both plants and meat (e.g., humans, bears).
Digestive systems are adapted to their specific diets.
Digestive Tract Structure
Basic Description:
Varies in complexity across species from simple tubular forms to advanced systems in vertebrates.
Key Components of Human Digestive System:
Alimentary canal (gastrointestinal tract): Food passes through in one direction.
Components: Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Rectum, Anus.
Accessory Organs: Aid digestion but do not pass food through (Liver, Gallbladder, Pancreas).

Pathway of Food: Mouth -> Pharynx -> Esophagus -> Stomach -> Small Intestine -> Large Intestine -> Anus.
Digestive Actions: Mechanical & chemical digestion at each stage with nutrient absorption primarily occurring in the intestines.
Structure & Functions of Digestive Components
Mouth
Components: Teeth, tongue, salivary glands.
Teeth: Break food into smaller pieces for enzyme action.
Tongue: Forms food into bolus for swallowing.
Salivary Glands: Secrete saliva containing:
Salivary Amylase: Breaks down starch into sugars.
Buffers: Neutralize acidity in food.
Antibacterial Substances: Prevent bacterial growth.
Esophagus
Transports food from pharynx to stomach using peristalsis (muscle contractions).
Sphincter muscles prevent backflow.
Stomach
Function: Mix and digest food with gastric juices (acidic enzymes).
Components:
Gastric Glands: Secrete hydrochloric acid (HCl) and pepsinogen.
Pepsinogen Activation: Converted to pepsin in low pH environment for protein digestion.
** Mucus Layer**: Protects stomach lining from being digested.
