Location of Asia

03 01 Longitude

• are angular distances measured

east and west from the Prime

Meridian. These are also big

circular lines that pass through

North Pole to South Pole.

02 Latitude

• are angular distances measured

north and south from the

equator. The equator divides the

globe into Northern and

Southern Hemispheres.

Location of Asia

03 03 Tropic of Cancer

• an imaginary line of latitude

located at 23.5° north of the

equator. It marks the northernmost

point on Earth where the sun can

appear directly overhead during

the summer solstice in June.

04 Tropic of Capricorn

• an imaginary line of latitude

located at 23.5° south of the

equator. It marks the southernmost

point on Earth where the sun can

appear directly overhead during

the summer solstice in December.

Location of Asia

03 05 Arctic Circle

• an imaginary line of latitude located at

approximately 66.5° north of the

equator. It marks the boundary of the

region where, for at least one day a

year, the sun does not rise (in winter)

or does not set (in summer), known as

the polar day and polar night.

06 Antarctic Circle

• an imaginary line of latitude located

at approximately 66.5° south of the

equator. Like the Arctic Circle, it marks

the region where the sun does not set

(in summer) or rise (in winter) for at

least one day a year.

Location of Asia

• are large land masses separated by

oceans. According to the traditional

model, the seven continents of the

Earth are Asia, Africa, North America,

South America, Antarctica, Europe,

and Australia.

07 Continent

The 7 Continents

Location of Asia

• Asia is the largest continent and is

located primarily in the Eastern

Hemisphere and the Northern

Hemisphere.

• the absolute location of Asia is

approximately at 10° south latitude to 95°

north latitude and from 11° to 175° east

longitude. In total, Asia has an area of

nearly 164 longitude and 85 latitudes.

Location of Asia

• It is bordered by several key geographical

features:

North: The Arctic Ocean.

East: The Pacific Ocean.

South: The Indian Ocean.

West: Europe, separated by the Ural Mountains,

Ural River, Caspian Sea, and the Caucasus

Mountains. It also borders the Mediterranean

Sea and the Red Sea.

The Origin of the

Word “Asia”

Global Perspective 7

1. Early Use of the Word "Asia"

It is said that the Greeks first used the

word "Asia" to define the small region

closest to Europe. The Greeks called

the land near Europe "Asia Minor" or

Anatolia and the larger landmass

beyond it "Asia Major.

"

2. The Iliad and Homer’s Reference

In the classic epic Iliad written by the

Greek writer Homer, "Asia" is used to

describe the continent that prevents

the Aegean sailors from traveling

eastward. It is clear that the term

"Asia" was first used by the Greeks to

identify one of the three divisions of

the world where they live in-Europe,

Asia, and Africa (then Libya).

3. The Meaning of "Asia" and "Europe"

The word "Asia" comes from the

Aegean word asu, meaning "place

where the sun rises" (dawn or east).

The word "Europe" comes from ereb,

meaning "sunset" (west).

European Perspective - In the early years,

Europe recognized itself as the center of the

world, so places were named according to the

European perspectives.

4. Introduction of the Term to Asia

No Native Origins

The word "Asia" did not originally exist in

the languages of Asian countries before

it was used by the Greeks. It is believed

that it first appeared in the Chinese

language as Ashiya and Japanese as

Ajiya.

It is also said that the Italian missionary

Matteo Ricci only brought the word "Asia"

into China and first appeared in Chinese

texts in the 17th century.
