15-Minute Vocabulary Activity: Canada-Themed Vocabulary Games for ESL Students

Title: Canada-Themed Vocabulary Relay

Objective:

Help ESL students learn and engage with Canadian-themed vocabulary through interactive and hands-on activities.

Activity Name: Vocabulary Match-Up Relay
Materials Needed:
  • Vocabulary flashcards (words + images) for sports, landscapes, and animals

  • Whiteboard or large paper for scoring

  • Markers

  • Timer or stopwatch

  • Tape or magnets (for sticking flashcards on a board)

Instructions:

Introduction (2 minutes):

  • Briefly introduce the vocabulary words related to Canada, breaking them into the three categories (sports, landscapes, animals).

  • Show the students the flashcards and discuss the meanings where necessary.

Setup (3 minutes):

  • Divide the class into two teams.

  • On one side of the classroom, place the flashcards face down.

  • On the other side, set up a whiteboard with two columns for each team to score points.

Relay Game (8 minutes):

  • Teams will take turns sending one student at a time to the flashcard pile.

  • The student eligible must pick a flashcard, read the vocabulary word, then run back to their team and explain or act out the word without saying it (if time permits, they can use a mini-sentence).

  • The rest of the team must guess the vocabulary word.

  • If they guess correctly within the time limit (1 minute per turn), the team earns a point.

  • Rotate turns among teams until all cards have been used, or time runs out.

  • Announce the winning team at the end and encourage positive feedback and teamwork.

Conclusion (2 minutes):

  • Summarize the vocabulary learned, focusing on words that were challenging.

  • Discuss any connections the students might have with the vocabulary regarding their experiences or knowledge about Canada.

Differentiation Options:
  • For students needing additional support, provide vocabulary lists with definitions/illustrations.

  • For advanced students, allow them to create a short story using the vocabulary words to present after the relay.

Follow-up Suggestions:
  • Assign students to look up one of the vocabulary words and find an interesting fact about it to share next class.

  • Set up a bulletin board with the vocabulary words and photos for ongoing reference.
