Revisiting Phonemes & Allophones

Phonemes

• Definition: Contrastive phonological units grouped into predictable variants (allophones).

• Characteristics:

  • Mental representations of sounds.

  • Distinctive sound classes in a language.

  • Signal a contrast in meaning.

  • Represented in slashes: /t/

  • Each phoneme may have one or more allophones.

Allophones

• Definition: Variants of a phoneme, usually in complementary distribution or free variation.

• Characteristics:

  • Physical representations of a phoneme.

  • Phonetically similar (subtle differences).

  • Do not signal a contrast in meaning.

  • Represented in square brackets: [t], [], etc.

Summary of Discussion

• Phonemes: Abstract mental units that distinguish meaning.

• Allophones: Actual pronunciations of phonemes in different environments.

• Phonological Rules: Derive allophones from phonemes and account for alternations among allophones.
