Literary analysis


  • Idiom

    • An idiom is an expression that cannot be understood from the meanings of its separate words but that has a separate meaning of its own. Many (although not all) idioms are examples of figurative language.

      • «No pain, no gain»

 

  • Hyperbole

    • Exaggerated statement or claim not meant to be taken literally.

 

  • «She is swimming in money»

  •  

  • Simile

    • When the words «as» or «like» make an explicit comparison between different things.

      • «Fast as lightning»

 

  • Metaphor

    • implicit comparison between two things that are different, but still have common characteristics to create to help the reader’s imagination

      • «My aunt is a walking encyclopedia»

    •  

  • Personification

    • Used to give an object or idea qualities of a living being.

      • «The winds was howling all night»

 

 

Plot

  • «The plot can be defined as the events in a literary work or film and the relationship between them. If you can describe what happens, why it happens, and the order in which the events are presented, you have identified the plot. Follows a five-stage structure:

    • Exposition

      • Explaining the problem

      • Ex = gang is walking to the apartment

    • Rising action

      •  

    • Climax/turning point

    • Falling action

    • Resolution
