Literary analysis
Idiom
An idiom is an expression that cannot be understood from the meanings of its separate words but that has a separate meaning of its own. Many (although not all) idioms are examples of figurative language.
«No pain, no gain»
Hyperbole
Exaggerated statement or claim not meant to be taken literally.
«She is swimming in money»
Simile
When the words «as» or «like» make an explicit comparison between different things.
«Fast as lightning»
Metaphor
implicit comparison between two things that are different, but still have common characteristics to create to help the reader’s imagination
«My aunt is a walking encyclopedia»
Personification
Used to give an object or idea qualities of a living being.
«The winds was howling all night»
Plot
«The plot can be defined as the events in a literary work or film and the relationship between them. If you can describe what happens, why it happens, and the order in which the events are presented, you have identified the plot. Follows a five-stage structure:
Exposition
Explaining the problem
Ex = gang is walking to the apartment
Rising action
Climax/turning point
Falling action
Resolution
