Why did England want colonies in the 1600’s?
England wanted the colonies in order to keep up with Spain and Portugal as they hoped to find more resources in North America. People also wanted to leave England for religious freedom because there was a lot of religious instability.
Why do people move? Why were most colonists that chose to come to the colonies from the middle class?
People move in hopes that they can attain a better life. Most people who came to the colonies were from the middle class because they wanted to escape their monarch in hopes that they would attain religious freedom.
How did joint-stock companies influence the development of the colonies?
Joint stock companies were created for multiple investors to pool their money together in order to finance a very costly expedition.
How did Jamestown change the economic direction of the colony when it had started to fail?
They started growing tobacco and selling it in England which then led the king to giving them more resources because they were making him money.
What did Bacon’s Rebellion show England?
Bacon’s rebellion undermined England’s trust with Berkeley and as a result, they appointed a new governor that would not tolerate a system in which wealthy people are favored.
How were Puritans different from Separatists? Describe the Puritan beliefs of salvation.
Puritans wanted to reform their church but separatists wanted to create a new church. The Puritans believed that salvation depended on God's will.
What was King Philip’s War? Who won? How?
King Phillip’s war was between the colonists and a confederation of Indians. It began with Metacom (Phillip) leading a confederation of Indians to raid English settlements. It ended by the colonists burning the Indian’s crops and the Indians running out of ammunition.
What country did New York’s founders come from?
They came from the Netherlands.
Who founded Delaware and what two aspects made up their economy?
Swedish and Finnish traders founded Delaware. Fur trade and grain farming were the two aspects that made up their economy.
What made Quakers unique compared to other Protestants?
Quakers did not have a clergy and they believed that men and women were equal. They were also pacifists who believed in peace. They were also highly tolerable to other religions.
Explain the difference between the 3 groups of colonies (Northern, Middle, & Southern). How did cash crops lead to the development of each group?
Northern: Strict puritan faith. When people were caught not following they blamed it on the witches but when the christians were caught they didn’t want to lie and go to hell so when they said they were they got hanged but if they confessed and said they were then they got “cleansed”. Also had the king philip's war.
Middle: The Dutch and Swedes established their own colonies. The Dutch built NYC and they did not make any attempt to convert the natives. Had good grain farming and a great fur trade. Eanlgand eventually attacked the Dutch and took the middle colonies. The fur trade and grain farming were the major source of the economy for the Middle Colonies.
Southern: Most people lived on large plots of land miles apart from each other. By the 17th century farmers and planters supported the south economically and politically. They are supported by slaves and held the most political power and owned the best land.
How did relationships with the Natives change over time? How did disease impact those relationships?
At first they didn’t argue too much with a few arguments here and there but after a while they started to cut down the trees for houses which angered the natives which broke them apart through war. The problem was the puritans had brought disease over from England that the natives’ bodies weren’t able to fight against causing them to become weakened
Why did some states like Georgia, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania have more religious tolerance than other colonies.
The leaders of those colonies were of a religion that wasn’t accepted in the other colonies so they made these colonies for other people with the same problem.
