Location of Volcanoes

  • A volcano is a mountain or hill with an opening (crater) at the top through which lava, rock fragments, ash, and gases erupt.

  • There are approximately 50 to 70 active volcanoes worldwide.

  • Many are located around the edges of the Pacific Ocean:

    • West coast of the Americas

    • East coast of Siberia, Japan, Philippines, and Indonesia

    • Island chains from New Guinea to New Zealand, known as the 'Ring of Fire'.

  • Active volcanoes are also found in Iceland, the Kenya Rift Valley in eastern Africa, Italy, and Hawaii.

  • Most active volcanoes are located on the edges of the large tectonic plates that make up Earth's solid surface.

Hot Spots and the Ring of Fire

  • Hot spots are volcanic regions with significant volcanic activity.

  • Scientists believe the mantle in these areas is much hotter.

  • Hot spots can be on, near, or far from tectonic plate boundaries.

  • Examples:

    • Hawaiian hot spot:

      • Produced a volcanic chain extending 6,000 km across the northwest Pacific Ocean.

    • Yellowstone hot spot:

      • Located in the United States of America and is 650 km long.

  • The Ring of Fire:

    • An area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

    • Contains over 50% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes.

    • About 90% of the world's earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire.

    • High volcanic and seismic activity is due to the continuous movement and collision of tectonic plates.

    • In the eastern section, the Nazca and Cocos Plates collide with and slide beneath the westward-moving South American Plate.

Volcano Structure

  • Key components of a volcano:

    • Crater: The opening at the top of the volcano.

    • Vent: The conduit through which magma travels.

    • Ash and gas cloud: Ejected during eruptions.

    • Volcanic bombs: Larger rock fragments ejected during eruptions.

    • Cone: The main body of the volcano.

    • Pipe: Connects the magma chamber to the vent.

    • Side vent: Secondary openings on the volcano's flanks.

    • Lava: Molten rock that flows onto the surface.

    • Ash layer: Accumulation of ash from eruptions.

    • Magma chamber: Underground reservoir of magma.

    • Magma: Molten rock beneath the Earth's surface.

Why Volcanoes Occur

  • Volcanoes form when tectonic plates collide, and one plate slides under another (subduction).

  • Subduction causes the mantle to melt, forming magma.

  • Magma rises through cracks and weak points in the Earth's crust, melting more rock.

  • Magma accumulates in magma chambers beneath the surface.

  • The intense heat deep inside the Earth causes some rocks to melt into magma.

  • Magma is lighter than surrounding solid rock and rises into magma chambers.

  • Eruptions occur when pressure in the magma chamber is high enough, or a crack opens in the crust due to tectonic plate movement.

  • Magma is forced up the vent and out through the crater.

  • Eruptions can cause lava flows, hot ash flows, mudslides, avalanches, falling ash, and floods.

  • The type of eruption and the composition of the magma determine the size and type of volcano.

  • Three basic types of volcanoes:

    • Shield volcano

    • Cinder cone

    • Composite volcano
