Workplace reading
- Definition: Reading to execute at a job.
- Examples: Reading people's background, emails.
Functional reading
- Definition: Reading for daily living.
- Examples: Clock, weather, cereal boxes, and recipes.
Text connections
- Text to text: Connecting one piece of writing to another piece of writing.
- Text to self: Connecting the text to your personal experiences.
- Text to world: Connecting the text to something that happened in the real world, past or present.
Schema and purpose
- Schema: your prior knowledge, everything you know at this very moment.
- Purpose: your schema helps you make connections for reading comprehension and understanding.
- Active reading: engaging with the text to improve understanding.
Active reading
- Mark or highlight keywords or phrases.
- Ask questions: What does this mean? Why does the author mention this? Clarify.
- Write notes about specific details. Make information more clear.
- React plus connect: Reactions. Personal feelings, connections.
Visualization and prediction
