Pre-Leadership Laboratory (Pre-LLAB) Knowledge & Customs

  • Assessment Requirements: All pre-LLAB knowledge is testable via quizzes, tests, or inspections. Questions regarding Pre-LLAB material are directed to the Inspector General Executive Officer (IG XO).

  • Customs and Courtesies — Saluting:

    • Salute outdoors and in designated indoor areas (such as the armory courts).

    • Salutes are rendered to Commissioned Officers of any branch and Professional Officer Course (POC) cadets.

    • Salutes must be rendered while wearing PCA, OCP, or SDU uniform with headgear (cover).

    • Do not salute Noncommissioned Officers (NCOs); offer the appropriate verbal greeting of the day instead.

    • Do not salute indoors unless actively reporting in or reporting out.

  • Customs and Courtesies — Verbal Greeting of the Day:

    • 0000–1159: "Good morning, sir/ma'am."

    • 1200–1659: "Good afternoon, sir/ma'am."

    • 1700–2359: "Good evening, sir/ma'am."

  • Order of Greeting Protocol:

    • Always greet cadre and officers before POC cadets.

    • Rank takes absolute priority when determining greeting sequence.

    • If two officers or POC are equal in rank, greet the female officer or POC first.

    • When greeting three or more officers or POC simultaneously, use "ladies and gentlemen" in place of "sir/ma'am".

  • Inability to Salute Scenario:

    • If carrying items or otherwise unable to physically render a salute, render the verbal greeting of the day, make direct eye contact, and acknowledge the individual respectfully.

  • Seven Basic Responses:

    1. "Yes, Sir/Ma'am"

    2. "No, Sir/Ma'am"

    3. "No excuse, Sir/Ma'am"

    4. "Sir/Ma'am, I do not know"

    5. "Sir/Ma'am, I do not understand"

    6. "Sir/Ma'am, may I ask a question"

    7. "Sir/Ma'am, may I make a statement"

  • Phonetic Alphabet:

    • Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliet, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-Ray, Yankee, Zulu.

  • Flag Display Guidelines:

    • The U.S. flag is always placed to the observer's left on a stage or podium.

    • No flag may be placed above or to the U.S. flag's "own right".

    • The U.S. flag must be hoisted first and lowered last.
