Retina and Visual Pathway Summary
Retina Components and Function
- Rods: Responsible for seeing faint stars; require gazing slightly away from the object to work effectively. Found almost everywhere on the retina except the fovea.
- Fovea: A tiny central area of the retina where vision is best. Contains only cones and is crucial for many visual tasks.
- Cones: Located in the fovea, vital for detailed vision.
Visual Signal Pathway
- Rods and cones convert light into electrochemical impulses.
- These impulses are transmitted to bipolar cells.
- The signal then moves to ganglion cells.
- The axons of the ganglion cells form the optic nerve.
- The optic nerve carries visual information to the brain for processing.
