Berlin Blockade

Successes:

• Operation Vittles: American Planes fly from Western Germany into Berlin dropping supplies to the inhabitants 

• Operation Little Vittles: American schools collect 12 tons of chocolate and sweets which are then dropped in mini-parachutes into West Berlin

• Operation Santa Claus: brought christmas gifts to 10,000 Berlin children 

• The US, UK, and France united their zones in Germany (creating West Germany) and Stalin calls off the blockade

• The treaty of Paris created the European Coal and Steel community (ECSC) which started the process of integration leading to the European Union. 

Failures: 

• In response to the creation of NATO the USSR set up the Warsaw pact, a military alliance of the communist states

• The Soviet Union banned all East Berliners from fleeing into West Berlin, they then began the construction of the “Berlin Wall” dividing the two parts of the city and closing off the last open path between East and West Europe.
