what goes in an intro (list below isn’t in order)

  • thesis

  • hook

  • talk about work/text type (blog)

    • here, can mention audience & text purpose

  • mention the arguments

  • answer guiding question (mentioned in thesis)

  • pertinent context (may be mentioned when introducing the work/text)

generally 6-7 paragraphs in a commentary

Paragraph 1 (used suggested structure 3)

  • author ‘seems’ to lead a humble life

    • says that she moved from Orange County to a mountain resort

  • comes from a privileged background

    • is able to provide wine, an authentic Spanish Paella pan

    • recipe serves 30-40 people

      • not very practical for regular families

        • showing how she has ppl to share food with, and has resources to prepare such a large dish???

  • she makes Christmas Spanish themed

    • but im sure the food has cultural significance - it’s not just food to be eaten but it means smthg important

    • so it kinda seems like she’s reducing the food to just its flavour & popularity

      • kinda ironic considering she’s Spanish, so she’s kind of ignoring the cultural importance of her foods

  • Christmas does revolve around family

    • portrays herself as someone who values family time & is family-oriented

  • kinda seems like power - idk if just sounds weird

    • telling the audience to remind her of the recipe and she’ll share it

Paragraph 2

  • appeals to ppl who hv Christmas dinners

    • they want to prepare food to serve their large family

  • could also appeal to anyone who cooks

    • they could modify dish to serve

  • establishes ethos by saying that she is Spanish (“the tongue of my ancestors”)

    • the reader trusts her recipe more because she has the cultural background

    • also shows her knowledge by sharing certain facts (“an authentic Spanish Paella need to be cooked outdoors in an authentic Spanish Paella Pan, over an open flame”)

      • also encourages reader to trust her knowledge

  • pathos - evokes the feeling of Christmas?

    • preparing large meals & inviting family over

Paragraph 3

  • uses casual language

    • makes sense because it is a blog post - makes the information easily accessible and establishes a kind of relationship between author and reader

  • also includes humour

    • again, makes the blog relatable and interesting to read

  • the pictures are warm-toned

    • evoke a sense of nostalgia or comfort

    • makes the reader feel the impact of the meals
