- Note: Salut! is an informal greeting that you can use with people your own age.
- Coucou! - Hello!/Hey there! (endearing to friends and family)
- Bonjour, Docteur/Madame/Monsieur/Mademoiselle! - Hello, Doctor/Mrs./Mr./Miss!
- Docteur - Doctor (Dr.)
- Madame - Mrs./ma’am (Mme.)
- Monsieur - Mr./sir (M.)

- Mesdames et Messieurs - Ladies and gentlemen
- Note: Monsieur, madame, and mademoiselle are almost always used without the person’s last name.
- Âllo. - Hello (phone)
- Bon après-midi - Good afternoon.
- Bonsoir - Good evening.
- Bonne nuit - Good night. (only said when you’re going to bed)
Saying Goodbye
- Au revoir. - Goodbye.
- Note: Au revoir is a very common expression to use when saying goodbye to someone.
- à bientôt! - Goodbye!/See you soon! (informal)
- Note: Say this if you plan to see the person again soon.
- à demain! - See you tomorrow! (formal)
- Note: Say this if you plan to see the person the next day.
- à tout à l’heure! - See you in a (little) while (informal)
- Note: Say this if you plan to see the person very soon.
- à plus (tard)! - See you later. (informal)
- Bonne journée! - Have a nice day!
- Bonne soirée! - Have a nice evening!
- Salut! - Bye! (greeting and goodbye)
- Ciao! - Bye!
- Note: Ciao is an informal expression you often hear. It comes from Italian and is used in many parts of Europe.

- Comment t’appelles-tu? - What’s your name? (informal)
- Tu t’appelles comment? - What’s your name? (informal)
- Note: Use this when you want to find out the name of a person whose about the same age as you. However, don’t use this expression with an older person.
