Unit 13 // Gasses

13.1 — Pressure

A Gas:

  • Uniformly fills any container

  • Mixes completely with any other gas

  • Exerts pressure on its surroundings

Pressure = force/area

SI units = Newton/meter² = 1 Pascal (Pa)

1 Standard Atmosphere = 101,325 Pa

1 Standard Atmosphere = 1 atm = 760 mm Hg = 760 torr

13.2 — Boyle’s Law

PxV = Constant

P1V1 = P2V2

avagadro’s law

N1/V1 = N2/V2

p1/t1=p2/t2

v1/t1=v2/t2

combined gas law:

p1v1/t1=p2v2/t2

nRT/PV

n = # of moles

p = pressure

v = volumes

t = temperature

r = gas constant (.08206 Lxatm/molxK) OR (8.31 LxkPa/molxK)
