Non sequitur - a statement wherein the conclusion does not logically follow its premise
Hyperbaton - reversal of typical sentence structure
Tautology - unnecessary repetition
Epistrophe - repetition of the final word in successive clauses
Homophones - words that sound the same but are spelled differently
Anaphora - Repetition at the beginning of a clause
Symploce - repetition at both the beginning and end of a clause
Assonance - Repetition of a vowel sound at the start of words
Anadiplosis - Repetition of the same word at the end of one clause and the start of the next
Epanalepsis - Repetition of the same words at the beginning and the end of a sentence
Diacope - Repetition of the same word with other words inbetween
Antanaclasis - Repetition of the same word, but with different meanings
Epizeuxis - Repetition of the same word immediately after
Polyptoton - repetition of words from the same root
Adjacency pairs - a unit of conversation where each speaker takes a turn
Anagnorisis - A moment of discovery or recognition, usually by the protagonist of a tragedy
Aphorism - short statements of insight and truth
Aposiopesis - the trailing off of speech, usually marked by an ellipsis
Catharsis - the process of cleansing purgation, by which the characters/audience feel a sense of emotional release due to what is happening within the play
Circumlocutory - play talking around the subject, without naming it directly
Eponymous - The character which gives its name to the title
Expressionism - Presents the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect
Hendiadys - expressing an idea using two words connected by an ‘and‘ (e.g. nice and warm)
Idiolect - an individual’s unique use of language
Incrementum - an arrangement of clauses/words to denote increasing size or power (e.g. good, better, best)
Interjection - an abrupt interruption or aside
Jocular - a joking, playful demeanour
Peripeteia -a sudden reversal of fortune or change in circumstance
Plastic Theatre - the use of props, sounds, light, and staging to convey abstract concepts
Realism - attempts to represent the subject matter truthfully, without artificiality
Sociolect - The particular dialect used by a certain social class/group
Syndetic list - listing using conjunctions to join items in the list
Asyndetic list - listing without using conjunctions to join items in the list
Synecdoche - the use of a par to represent the whole (e.g. a new set of wheels meaning a car)
Zoomorphism - when humans are given animalistic qualities
Anthropomorphism - when animals / non-humans are given human qualities
Anachronism - attributing an idea (or object) to a historical period in which it does not exist

Litotes - when you confirm something is true by saying the opposite is not the case (you’re not sorry)
Polysyndeton - repetition of the same conjunction
Tautology - when a sentence expresses the same sentiment twice
In media res - when a story throws you into the middle of a scene already occurring without any exposition
Metonym - when a word comes to serve as a synonym for another word, although they do not meant the same thing (typically a single word comes to embody an institution)
Antonamasia - the substitution of an epithet ore title for a proper name
