RALPH NADER

scathing indictment that lambasted the auto industry for producing unsafe vehicles.

GERALD FORD

Served as the 38th president of the United States from 1974 to 1977 and remains the

only person who served as Vice President and President of the United States but was

never elected to either office.

CESAR CHAVEZ

Co-founder of the United Farm Workers Association which was the first successful

farm workers union in American history.

NOW

Organization founded by a group of activists who wanted to end sex discrimination.

AIM

Organization that address systemic issues of poverty, discrimination, and police

brutality against American Indians.

OPEC

Organization made up of leading oil-producing countries whose purpose is to

collectively influence the global oil market and maximize profit.

YOUNG LORDS

Originally a Chicago street gang fighting gentrification and unfair evictions in Puerto

Rican neighborhoods, burgeoned into a national political movement in the late

1960s.

IMMIGRATION ACT 1965

Eliminated national origin, race, and ancestry as a basis for immigration, making

discriminating against obtaining visas illegal.

REFORM ACT 1986

Limited future immigration by implementing stronger border control procedures.

TITLE IX

Requires that no person be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or

subjected to discrimination on the basis of sex under “any education program or

Constitution of the United States generally protected a right to have an abortion.

ACTON

Held that an Oregon public school did not violate students' Fourth Amendment rights

by mandating random drug tests for students.

TERRY V OHIO

Upheld the constitutionality of the "stop-and-frisk" procedure as long as the police

officer has a "reasonable suspicion" that the person is about to commit a crime, has

committed a crime or is in the process of committing a crime.

SILENT SPRING

Documented the environmental harm caused by the indiscriminate use of a type of

pesticide used by soldiers during WW2.

THREE MILE ISLAND

Site of the most serious nuclear reactor accident in the history of the American

nuclear power industry.
