Cosmetology | Safety and Sanitation

The 3 levels of decontamination are:

1) Sterilization

2) Disinfection

3) Sanitation

Sterilization is completed after sanitation and disinfection, this step means all bacteria is killed [ essential for when in contact with blood ]

Disinfection is completed after sanitation. It means you are using a solution to kill up to 99% bacteria [ 70% rubbing alcohol, barbicide, hand sanitizer ]

Sanitation means to reduce the amount of bacteria that is left on the surface

[ sweeping floor, wiping table, washing hands, etc ]

The most common disinfectant used in a salon is barbicide

Barbicide is a disinfectant solution used by barbers and cosmetologists for disinfecting grooming tools such as combs and hair cutting shears

[ mix in proper amount with water. Let sit for ten minutes ]

After using combs and brushes, remove hair, disinfect using barbicide or alcohol

In our classroom, the first aid kit is located in the back of the classroom in a drawer by the washer and dryer machine

A first aid kit is a collection of supplies and equipment used to give immediate medical treatment, primarily to treat injuries and other mild or moderate medical conditions

[bandages, gloves, gauze pads, tape, etc ]

A way to prevent the spread of germs is to always wash hands, and if sick, stay home

A Pathogen is a harmful microorganism that may cause disease or infection when they invade the body

Non-Pathogens are organisms which does not cause disease, harm, or death, to another organism

If I come into contact with blood I should tell the teacher first then apply pressure to the blood area to stop bleeding, clear with alcohol, then bandage

The proper hand washing procedure is to lather hands with soap for twenty seconds then rinse. When turning tap off, use your arm or a towel
