Kidney – Exercise 1: Low-Magnification Landmarks
Gross Orientation of the Kidney
- The kidney’s surface is described as a slightly curved base.
- The instructor traces this curved surface, emphasizing its continuity around the organ.
Base vs. Apex
- Base
- Essentially synonymous with the kidney’s superficial, curved aspect.
- Serves as a landmark before moving inward to deeper structures.
- Apex
- Formed by the conjunction of the renal crest and the curved surface.
- Functions as a reference point for orienting subsequent microscopic views.
Renal Crest
- Explicitly identified in the low-magnification view as the structure projecting toward the medial concavity.
- Visualized and labeled so students can later correlate it with collecting duct entry points in higher magnification.
Planned Progression of Observation
- Begin with overview/low magnification to understand gross landmarks.
- Move to higher magnification in future steps to pinpoint fine structures (glomeruli, tubules, vasculature, etc.).
