TYPES OF THINKING:

  • analytical thinking = more cognitive resources

  • heuristics = mental shortcuts that work most of the time, not guaranteed the correct solution

DEDUCTIVE REASONING:

  • premise 1: CN tower taller than empire state building

  • premise 2: empire state building is taller than the eiffel tower

  • conclusion: CN tower is taller than eiffel tower

    • if A > B & B > C therefore A > C

  • valid does not always equal true

DEDUCTIVE REASONING TASKS:

  • conditional = deals with relationships between conditions, using words like or, and, if… then

  • categorical = refers to quantities, using words like all, some, none 

    • premise 1: some psych students are girls

    • premise 2: some girls have long hair
