Plant Fertility

  • Species-Specific Requirements:

    • Plant fertility needs vary by species.

    • Customization of fertilization programs is necessary for each species.

Fertilizer Labels

  • Nutrient Information:

    • Fertilizer bags provide nutrient content details:

      • Major Nutrients: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), and micronutrients.

      • Format: N-P-K levels prominently displayed.

  • Understanding N-P-K Ratios:

    • For example, a 50 lb bag of 10-10-10 contains 5 lbs each of N, P, and K.

Nutrient Availability

  • Immediate vs. Delayed Availability:

    • Nutrients can be available for immediate uptake or may require breakdown over time.

    • Breakdown influenced by environmental factors:

      • Microbial activity

      • Temperature

      • Water presence

Types of Fertilizers

Liquid Fertilizers

  • Composition: Nutrients are dissolved in water for immediate uptake by plants.

  • Characteristics:

    • Leach faster in soils.

    • Require regular application.

  • Fertigation:

    • Involves direct injection of fertilizers into irrigation systems.

    • Effective for both field and container compatible methods.

Fertigation Systems

  • Dosatron:

    • Described as the “horticulture industry's workhorse.”

    • Operates by pulling water, mixing with fertilizer, and delivering through a hose.

  • Mixing Chamber:

    • Allows controlled blending of water and fertilizer.

    • Adjustable ratios for precise applications.

Drip Irrigation

  • Functionality: Delivers water directly to the plant roots.

  • Adaptability:

    • Features holes spaced according to plant spacing.

    • Different lengths available for various planting configurations.

    • Spaghetti tubing can be utilized for container plants.

Slow-Release Fertilizers

  • Mechanism: Nutrients require microbial or environmental breakdown for plant uptake.

  • Types: Includes polymer-coated fertilizers like Osmocote, which can last from 3 months to a year.

  • Application Guidelines:

    • Generally added to media before planting or through top dressings later.

    • Caution needed to avoid fertilizer burn, especially for young plants.

  • Application Timing:

    • Apply in spring for established plants; a second application can be made mid-season.

Organic Fertilizers

  • Sources: Derived from natural materials and may include compost tea, manure, and worm castings.

  • Characteristics:

    • Require microbial activity for breakdown.

    • Improve soil structure and health but break down slowly, especially in cold conditions.

OMRI Listed Products

  • Definition: OMRI-approved products contain verified organic materials.

  • Use Requirement: Essential for organic operation marketing.

Types of Organic Fertilizers

  • Fish Emulsion:

    • Liquid organic fertilizer derived from fish by-products, blended with sawdust and molasses.

  • Bone Meal:

    • Ground animal bones, excellent for phosphorus addition.

  • Kelp Meal:

    • Ground brown seaweed, beneficial for potassium.

  • Potash:

    • Mined minerals beneficial for potassium; should be OMRI approved for organic use.

  • Blood Meal:

    • Dried animal blood, rich in nitrogen.

  • Feather Meal:

    • Ground feathers, another nitrogen source from poultry.

Mixing Organic Fertilizers

  • Blending Techniques:

    • Create general-purpose fertilizers for easier application.

    • Care in measuring is crucial for desired nutrient ratios.
