assisted suicide/euthanasia
HUMANISTS: accept euthanasia
reject sanctity of life
believe that is the decision of the individual to make about ending their life
favour legalising assisted suicide and euthanasia as it would help people make their own choice about end of life
right to self determination
accepts palliative care if it is the persons wish
WEAK: ill people aren’t thinking with their full ‘mind’. instead could be a cry for comfort. can’t make serious decision as they’re suffering and might be pressurised
SOME CHRISTIANS: agree
believe in quality of life > sanctity of life
God created us with free will -we can CHOOSE what to do with our bodies
‘love thy neighbour’ means not allowing them to be in pain or fear. euthanasia = most compassionate option
taught -’do unto others as you would have done unto you’- would you want to suffer unnecessarily
WEAK: Pope Francis = beware of false compassion. Pope Benedict = euthanasia is a false solution
CATHOLICS: disagree
God created life so God can take it away
bodies ‘temple of holy spirit’- st Paul. God lives in us
God has planned our life ‘ i know the plans I have forged’ Jeremiah. euthanasia interrupts those plans
Bible = ‘ thou shalt not kill’
PJP = ‘ a grave violation of the law’ Evangelium Vitae
CATHOLICS: disagree
St Paul: ‘clothe yourself in compassion and kindness’. not compassionate to let a person die of euthanasia'
Jesus Gospel: ‘i came so that you can may have life and live it to the full’. shouldn’t allow euthanasia as purposely ending someone’s sooner mean they are not living life to the fullest euthanasia goes against these
slippery slope= euthanasia cases roses by over 4,000 between 2002-2015. people who aren’t terminally ill can seek euthanasia
doctor play God. decide to who lives and who will die
STRONG: cases in Switzerland have risen, non-terminally ill patients have undegone euthanasia = more vunerable groups can be euthanized
MCA
Catholics = slippery slope. 10 C. ST Paul our bodies ‘not our own’, they belong to God, he has the right to end our lives
