Enterprise Wireless Network Configuration Guide

Network Topology and Device Inventory

  • End Devices:

    • Laptop: Serves as the administrative workstation for direct initial out-of-band management and GUI configuration of the Wireless LAN Controller (WLC).
    • DHCP Server: Centralized server (renamed DHCP from Server0) providing IP address allocation, default gateway assignment, DNS settings, and Option 43 WLC discovery addresses across the network.
  • Wireless Infrastructure Devices:

    • Wireless LAN Controller (WLC): Cisco 2504 Wireless LAN Controller managing all lightweight access points centrally.
    • Lightweight Access Points (LAPs): Three Lightweight Access Point PG3 units positioned to provide overlapping wireless coverage across a facility, renamed as follows:
    • LW0
    • LW1
    • LW2
  • Switching Infrastructure:

    • Cisco Catalyst 2960 Switch: Hostnamed S1, configured with a dedicated VLAN (VLAN 99) to isolate wireless management traffic across ports FastEthernet0/1 through FastEthernet0/6.

Initial Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) GUI Setup Procedure

  • Physical Cabling and Initial Management Link:

    • Connect a straight-through Ethernet cable from the Laptop FastEthernet port to GigabitEthernet 1 (G0/1) on the WLC.
    • Access the Laptop IP configuration panel and toggle the interface between Static and Dynamic (DHCP) to trigger address acquisition.
    • The WLC issues an IP address in the 192.168.1.0/24 network segment, assigning 192.168.1.1 as the Default Gateway.
  • Web Browser Wizard Configuration Settings:

    • Open a browser on the Laptop and navigate to 192.168.1.1 to access the setup wizard.
    • Administrative Credentials:
    • Username: admin
    • Password: Cisco123
    • System and Management Interface Settings:
    • System Name: NTWK
    • Management Interface IP Address: 192.168.10.2
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (/24/24)
    • Default Gateway: 192.168.10.1
    • Management VLAN ID: 0 (default)
    • Initial Wireless LAN (WLAN 1) Settings:
    • Network Name (SSID): STUDENTS
    • Security Protocol: WPA2 Personal (WPA2-PSK)
    • Passphrase / Pre-Shared Key: I love network
    • Guest Network: Disabled (unchecked)
    • Advanced Settings:
    • Virtual IP Address: Retained at factory default values.
    • Apply Settings: Review initial setup parameters, click Apply, and select OK to reboot and apply parameters.

Cisco Catalyst 2960 Switch Configuration

  • Initial Switch Hardening and Hostname Setup:

    • Access privileged EXEC mode and global configuration mode:
    • enable
    • configure terminal
    • Disable automatic domain name lookup to prevent CLI delays on mistyped commands:
    • no ip domain lookup
    • Configure device hostname:
    • hostname S1
  • VLAN Creation and Interface Port Allocation:

    • Create dedicated management VLAN for wireless infrastructure:
    • vlan 99
    • name WIRELESS
    • Configure interface range FastEthernet0/1 through FastEthernet0/6 as static access ports assigned to VLAN 99:
    • interface range FastEthernet0/1 - 6
    • switchport mode access
    • switchport access vlan 99

Server IP and DHCP Service Setup

  • Server Interface Static IP Assignment:

    • On the server named DHCP, navigate to Desktop -> IP Configuration and assign:
    • IP Address: 192.168.10.3
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (/24/24)
    • Default Gateway: 192.168.10.1
  • DHCP Service and Option Configuration:

    • Navigate to Services -> DHCP and configure the service pool:
    • Service: Set to On
    • Pool Name: serverPool
    • Default Gateway: 192.168.10.1
    • DNS Server: 192.168.10.3
    • Start IP Address: 192.168.10.100
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (/24/24)
    • Maximum Number of Users: 50
    • WLC IP Address (Option 43 Pointer): 192.168.10.2
    • Click Save to activate the IP address pool.
