Spleen: Organ located on the upper left side of the abdomen, responsible for immune functioning.

Gallbladder : Small sac under the liver that stores bile, which is necessary for carbohydrate breakdown

Liver: Large organ located on the right side of the abdomen; secretes bile; stores sugar, iron and vitamins; produces blood proteins; destroys worn out red blood cells; and filters toxins.

Small intestine: Longest part of the gastrointestinal tract, where the majority of nutrient absorption occurs

Trachea: Another name for the windpipe, which allows oxygen to enter and carbon dioxide to leave the lungs

Pancreas: Organ behind the stomach that produces insulin and enzymes vital to the digestive process, also consists of specialized endocrine cells.

Heart: 4 chambered pump consisting of a special type of muscle tissue

Thyroid Gland: Located near the trachea and larynx, secretes hormones necessary for maintaining a normal level of metabolism in all body cells

Femur: Responsible for forming portion of the hip at its proximal end, and the knee at its distal end.

Colon: Makes up the largest part of the large intestine

Lungs: parried organs that are not mirror images of each other; house respiratory passages

Appendix: Small part of the large intestine, responsible for immune functioning

Kidneys: Bean-shaped organs located on the posterior aspect of the of the abdominal cavity and on each side of the spine in the lumbar spine.

Stomach: Muscular organ that receives food from the esophagus

Bladder: hollow, muscular sac located in the pelvic region; temporary reservoir for urine.

Anterior: Front of

Posterior: behind of

Medial: Toward/middle/center

Lateral: Away from midline

Deep: Deep under skin

Superficial: near skin

Ipsilateral: On same side of body

Contralateral: Opposite side of body

Dorsal: Along back side or surface

Ventral: Along the front side or surface

SUperior: On top

Inferior: On the bottom

Supine: Position where someone lies face up w/ head neck spine in a neutral position

Prone: Position where someone lies on their stomach

Distal: Further away from the center of the body

Proximal: Closer to the center of the body

BIlateral: Both sides of the body

Joint: A place where to bones meet to allow for movement

Tendon: connects muscles to bones

Ligament: connects bone to bone
