Foundational Levels of Biological Organization

  • Chemical Level: This is the simplest, non-living level consisting of the building blocks of matter.

    • Atoms: Examples include hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen (O2O_2).

    • Molecules: These are created when atoms are mixed together (H2OH_2O is an example of two hydrogens and one oxygen).

  • Organelles: These are small components that make up cells. They are often described as "small organs."

    • Mitochondria: These contain their own DNA and are distinct from other human structures. They are essentially "little aliens" living inside human cells.

  • Cellular Level: The cell is the basic unit of life and the smallest unit that can exist independently.

    • Simple Cuboidal Epithelium: A specific cell type that will be studied in detail later.

  • Tissue Level: This level is reached by grouping similar cells together.

  • Organ Level: This level is reached by grouping multiple different tissues together to perform a specific function.

  • Organ System Level: This involves multiple organs working together. There are 11 different organ systems in total.

  • Organismal Level: The highest level of organization, reached by grouping all 11 organ systems together into a whole organism.

The Four Primary Tissue Types

  • Epithelial Tissue: Covers surfaces, such as the skin.

  • Connective Tissue: A broad category including bone, blood, cartilage, and fat.

  • Muscle Tissue:

    • Cardiac Muscle: Located in the heart.

    • Smooth Muscle: Found around tube structures like blood vessels and the digestive tract to help move substances through the body.

  • Nervous Tissue: Composed of neurons that make up the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.

Detailed Overview of the 11 Organ Systems

  • Integumentary System: Includes skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands.

  • Skeletal System: Includes bones, ligaments, and cartilages.

    • Costal Cartilages: These connect the ribs to the sternum. They provide flexibility for the chest to expand and contract during breathing, which is necessary for pressure changes that inflate and deflate the lungs.

  • Muscular System: Primarily consists of skeletal muscles.

  • Respiratory System: Includes the trachea, bronchi, and lungs. Its purpose is gas exchange, specifically inhaling oxygen (O2O_2) and exhaling carbon dioxide (CO2CO_2).

  • Cardiovascular System: Also known as the circulatory system. "Cardio" refers to the heart and "vascular" refers to blood vessels. It consists of the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries. It acts as a transport system.

  • Lymphatic System: Often called the lymphoid system. It includes lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, and lymph.

    • System Function: Capillaries are naturally leaky; the lymphatic system collects the leaked watery fluid (lymph) and returns it to the blood supply.

    • Immune Surveillance: Living immune cells in lymph nodes check for bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells to destroy them.

  • Urinary System: Filters waste out of the blood and regulates water balance and blood pressure. Includes kidneys, ureters, the urinary bladder, and the urethra.

  • Endocrine System: Secretes hormones within the body to be distributed by the blood. Examples include the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, thymus, pancreas (which secretes insulin and glucagon), and gonads.

  • Nervous System: The coordination and communication system. Includes the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and senses. It processes information and sends motor instructions to effectors (muscles or glands).

  • Digestive System: Processes food for nutrient absorption.

    • Alimentary Canal: The tube running from the mouth to the anus. Because it is open to the environment at both ends, it is technically considered "outside" the body.

    • Organs: Mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and intestines.

  • Reproductive System: Includes sex-specific organs such as the testes, scrotum, epididymis, seminal vesicles, and prostate in males, and various reproductive structures in females.

Anatomical Positions and Directional Terms

  • Anatomical Position: The reference position where the body is facing forward, feet are forward, arms at sides, and palms are facing forward.

  • Significance of Position: Assuming this position is vital because moving limbs (like the radius and ulna in the arm) changes their relative orientation.

  • Left and Right: These terms always refer to the patient’s left and right, not the observer's.

  • Medial vs. Lateral: Medial is toward the middle (midline); lateral is off to the side.

  • Superior vs. Inferior: Superior is above; inferior is below. These standardly apply to the axial core.

  • Proximal vs. Distal: Used for appendages. Proximal is closer to the main core of the body; distal is further away (at a greater distance).

  • Anterior vs. Posterior: Anterior is the front side; posterior is the back side.

  • Ventral vs. Dorsal: Ventral means belly side; dorsal means back.

  • Superficial vs. Deep: Superficial is closer to the surface; deep is further into the body.

Body Regions and Subdivisions

  • Axial Region: Includes the head, neck, and the main torso (chest, abdomen, and pelvis).

  • Appendicular Region: Includes the limbs (appendages) and the structures that attach them to the core (shoulders and hips).

  • Specific Sub-Regions:

    • Cervical: The neck.

    • Deltoid: The point of the shoulder.

    • Antebrachial: The forearm ("ante" means before; before the arm).

    • Carpal: The wrist.

    • Phalanges/Digital: Fingers and toes.

    • Pectoral: The chest.

    • Sternal: The center of the chest (sternum).

    • Umbilical: The navel (belly button).

    • Coxal: The hip.

    • Inguinal: The groin (off to the side).

    • Femoral: The thigh.

    • Patellar: The front of the knee.

    • Popliteal: The back of the knee.

    • Curl: The lower leg.

    • Tarsal: The ankle.

    • Vertebral: The center of the back.

    • Dorsal/Dorsum: The general back area.

    • Gluteal: The buttock.

Body Planes and Imaging

  • Planes: These are imaginary two-dimensional flat surfaces used to visualize three-dimensional structures.

  • Frontal (Coronal) Plane: Divides the body into anterior and posterior (ventral and dorsal) sections. Named after the coronal suture of the skull.

  • Sagittal (Median) Plane: Divides the body into left and right sections.

    • Median: Directly in the middle.

    • Paramedian: Off-center or off to the side.

  • Transverse (Horizontal) Plane: Divides the body into superior and inferior sections.
