Measuring Length with Rulers

Materials Required for Measurement

  • Units of Measurement:

    • The quarter inch (in.), half inch (in.), and inch (in.) are customary units used to measure length.

  • Markings on the Ruler:

    • Some measures on the ruler are not exact.

    • These measures are indicated as rounded to the nearest unit.

  • Measurement Rule:

    • Align the object with the beginning of the ruler for accurate measurement.

Breakdown of Measurements

  • Quarter Inch (1/4 in.):

    • There are 4 quarter inches in every inch.

  • Half Inch (1/2 in.):

    • There are 2 half inches in every inch.

  • Inch (1 in.):

    • The longest marks indicate whole inches: 1, 2, 3, etc.

  • Align the end of one of the objects with the beginning of the ruler.
