Why is writing considered one of the greatest contributions of the ancient Sumerians?

Ancient Sumerian scribes created the crueniform script. As society became more complex, writing enabled government to make tax records, traders to record transactions, and priests to record rituals and calendar. Soon, writing was also used to record history, such as wars and natural disasters, as well as record the results of censuses, allowing archaeologists to understand what life in ancient Sumeria was like and hypothesize the reason for its decline. Due to the fact that ancient Sumerians wrote on clay tablets, mny of these records are still accessible today and available for studying.
