Effects of Medications and Foods on Urine Color

  • Anticoagulants: May cause blood in urine, leading to discoloration.

  • Diuretics: Increase urination; urine may become pale (not clear as water).

  • Perimetem: Used for bladder spasms; can turn urine orange or orange-red.

  • Vitamin C & Beta-Carotene: Foods like sweet potatoes and carrots can cause orange-colored urine.

  • Liver Disease: Can alter urine color.

  • Antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline) & B-complex vitamins: May result in green or bluish-green urine.

  • Medications like L-dopa: Can cause brown or black urine.

  • Fava Beans: Known to affect urine color.

  • Antibiotics & Laxatives: Can cause darker brown urine.

Important Note

  • Any urine color outside of pale yellow to straw to yellow should be investigated to determine if there is an underlying issue, although some changes can have normal explanations.
