National Parks

  • An area established under Section 35[4] of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

  • Established by central and state governments according to regulations from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

  • Provides protection to the entire ecosystem: flora, fauna, landscape, etc.

National Park Numbers

  • There are a total of 106 National Parks in India.

India's National Parks - The First, Largest and Smallest

  • First National Park of India: Hailey National Park, Uttarakhand, established in 1936 (also known as Jim Corbett National Park).

  • Largest National Park of India: Hemis National Park, Ladakh - 4400 square kilometers (also the largest National Park of South Asia).

  • Smallest National Park of India: South Button Island National Park, Andaman and Nicobar Islands - 0.03 square kilometers.

Assam's New National Parks (June 9, 2021)

  • Assam gets 2 new national parks, totaling seven.

  • The two new national parks are Dihing Patkai and Raimona.

  • Assam already had five national parks: Kaziranga, Manas, Dibru-Saikhowa, Nameri, and Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park.

  • 5+2=75 + 2 = 7

National Park Numbers by State

  • Assam has the third-highest number of national parks in the country after Madhya Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

  • Madhya Pradesh has 11 National Parks.
