  • Debate: prop 1: Democracy in USA is a precondition for development — my team

  • Other team is vice versa (Development in the US is a precondition for democracy)

  • Prepare from cases from developing world, authors, ect

  • Democracy allows people to express themselves freely and for development to occur

  • Democracatization allows for businesses to flourish and develop beyond how they would previously be able to

  • Interests of the people

  • Free soeech and media reduces corruption

  • Welfare state bc of democracy

  • Robust infrastructures

  • Lessened inequalities are better over time

  • More economic development bc of less middle class

OPPOSITION:

  • Allows for democracy bc they have more incentives to act politically

  • If state is legitimate ppl will feel represented but we should acknowledge that legitimany is related to economic development

  • When states are poor like in Sudan democratic prevelance is a result of state insitutitions

  • Balance to go back to autohritarian state, counter eg: Taiwan developed before democracy, Taiwan was able to raise martial law in teh 80s and have been one of the most successful first, in Haiti they tried to democratize but they keep increasing their debt
