Neuromuscular Junction

• Definition: The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is the synapse or junction between a motor neuron and a muscle fiber.

• Key Components:

  • Postsynaptic Membrane:

  • Also known as the motor end plate.

  • Located on the sarcolemma (the cell membrane) of the muscle fiber.

  • Formed by junctional folds, enhancing the surface area for interactions.

  • Acetylcholine (ACh) Receptors:

  • These are transmembrane proteins located in the postsynaptic membrane.

  • Responsible for binding to acetylcholine released from motor neurons, initiating muscle contraction.

  • Acetylcholinesterase (AChE):

  • An enzyme present at the neuromuscular junction that breaks down acetylcholine.

  • This degradation of ACh is crucial as it prevents continuous stimulation of the muscle fiber, allowing for controlled muscle contractions.
