Categories

Alan Cooper, a prominent figure in the UX community, identifies three key types of scenarios:

  1. Context-based scenarios: These scenarios illustrate user needs within real-life contexts, offering a rich, relatable narrative that informs design decisions. For instance, they may detail how a busy professional uses a productivity app during their commute.

  2. Key path scenarios: These outline the essential user journey through a system, focusing on core tasks and decision points. They simplify complex processes by breaking them down into manageable steps, thereby streamlining navigation and enhancing usability.

  3. Validation scenarios: These scenarios test the design against various edge cases, ensuring the product behaves appropriately in unusual situations. They are essential for refining designs by simulating error conditions and assessing the system’s responses to unexpected user behavior.

Use of Scenarios in Product Development

Developing Context-Based Scenarios

  1. Create Problem & Vision Statements:

    • Vision Statement: Describe the ideal future state post-implementation, painting a picture of success that guides design efforts.

  2. Brainstorm Solutions: Generate a wealth of ideas on ways to solve the problems identified in the problem statements. These brainstorming sessions encourage creativity and a wide range of potential solutions.

  3. Identify Persona Expectations: Understand the specific outcomes and experiences that personas aim to achieve:

    • End Goals: These are the primary outcomes that users wish to accomplish with the product.

    • Experience Goals: These reflect user expectations concerning usability, aesthetic quality, and overall interaction with the product.

  4. Construct Context Scenarios: Craft narratives that place personas in relatable situations, demonstrating how they might use the product in real life. For example, a fitness motivation persona using a home workout app to stay on track with their fitness goals during a busy schedule.

  5. Identify User Needs: Compile a list of specific features or requirements based on the personas' goals and the identified contexts, ensuring that the design addresses actual user needs effectively.

Key Path Scenarios

Key path scenarios are crucial for:

  • Representing essential user journeys through the system, capturing the most critical interactions users will have.

  • Streamlining complex processes to make navigation straightforward, highlighting vital tasks, and eliminating unnecessary steps to enhance usability.

Validation Scenarios

Validation scenarios focus on:

While not always recommended for context-based scenarios, storyboards can enhance visualization and understanding in the design process. They help clarify the narrative of user interactions, providing consistency and facilitating effective communication between stakeholders involved in product development. Storyboards can illustrate user goals, translating them into actionable user requirements that drive the design process forward.
