Historical Background
  • Crown Point peninsula on west shore of Lake Champlain long recognised as strategic defensive position; visited since era of Samuel de Champlain.
  • French constructed a small fort in the 1730s; destroyed it themselves in 1759 as British threat loomed.
  • 1759: British occupy site and begin building a five-pointed stone-and-wood fortification—largest in the
