National Insight (Wawasan Kebangsaan)

  • General definition: Vision or mind-set of citizens toward selves & surroundings within life of nation-state.
  • Prof. Muladi (Governor of Lemhannas RI): Way the Indonesian nation views itself & its environment, prioritising unity & territorial integrity in all state affairs.
  • Significance:
    • Forms collective identity & spirit of togetherness.
    • Guiding principle in policies, governance, & citizenship duties.

Key Historical Milestones

  1. 20 May 1908 – Youth gather in STOVIA hall → Establish Boedi Oetomo (first modern nationalist org).
  2. 25 Oct 1908 – Perhimpunan Indonesia (PI) founded in Leiden by Sutan Kasayangan & R.N. Noto Suroto; first group to adopt term “Indonesia” internationally.
  3. 30 Apr 1926 – First Youth Congress (Kerapatan Besar Pemuda) in Jakarta; organisations: Jong Java, Jong Sumatranen Bond, etc.
  4. 27–28 Oct 1928 – Second Youth Congress → Sumpah Pemuda (Youth Pledge) affirming one motherland, one nation, one language: Indonesia.
  5. 01 Mar 1945 – Japan forms BPUPKI to investigate independence preparation; becomes PPKI on 07 Aug 1945.
  6. 19 Dec 1948 – Establishment of Pemerintahan Darurat Republik Indonesia (PDRI) to fill leadership vacuum during Dutch aggression (basis for National Defence Day).

Definition & Legal Basis of State Defence (Bela Negara)

  • Law No 23/2019 §1 (11): “…determination, attitude, behaviour & actions of citizens—individual or collective—in safeguarding sovereignty, territorial integrity & people’s safety based on love for NKRI grounded on Pancasila & 1945 Constitution…”.

National Defence Day (Hari Bela Negara)

  • Presidential Decree No 28/2006: 19 Dec designated to honour PDRI formation & foster patriotism/ unity.

Citizens’ Participation in Bela Negara (Law 23/2019 §7)

  • Routes include civic education with State-Defence Awareness, embedding 5 core values:
