Evaluation on Piaget's theory of cognitive development

+:

P - research support from Howe regarding children making their own mental representations

Ev - found that children (9-12) in groups of 4 came to different conclusions about the movements of objects down a slops. They all had an increased understanding however their understanding was varied

Ex - therefore, this supports Piaget’s theory that children their own mental representations

\
P - application to teaching in the classroom

Ev - for example, children are more likely to have activity based lessons to construct their own understanding, as opposed to old-fashioned teaching methods of solely copying the board

Ex - therefore this theory has strong practical/real-life applications

\
-:

P - Piaget may have underplayed the role of other people

Ev - he focused on the mind of the individual learner and didn’t put much emphasis on other people. Whereas other theories such as Vygotsky’s, saw the interaction with others as essential

Ex - therefore, this is not really taken into account in Piaget’s work and is therefor not a complete explanation

\
P - Piaget may have underplayed the roe of language in learning

Ev - he saw language as developing in line with other abilities. Whereas, others saw language as shaping our understanding of the world

Ex - therefore, Piaget’s theory may not be complete
