Management of Ingested Poisons (EGAM)

I. Treatment Approaches

  • Emetics

    • Use Ipecac syrup

      • Causes vomiting (emesis) by irritating the stomach lining and stimulating the vomiting center in the brain (medulla oblongata).

      • Dosage: 30ml for adults; 10-15ml for children (both mixed in a glass of water).

II. Contraindications for Ipecac Syrup

  • Do NOT use if the person is:

    1. Allergic to any ingredient.

    2. Swallowed harmful substances such as (SAAKGCFPC):

      • Strychnine

      • Alkali, Acid, Kerosene

      • Gasoline, Coal Oil, Fuel Oil, Paint Thinner, Cleaning Fluid

    3. Already treated with activated charcoal.

    4. Unconscious, semiconscious, very drowsy, severely intoxicated (drunk), or having seizures.
