Management of Ingested Poisons (EGAM)
I. Treatment Approaches
Emetics
Use Ipecac syrup
Causes vomiting (emesis) by irritating the stomach lining and stimulating the vomiting center in the brain (medulla oblongata).
Dosage: 30ml for adults; 10-15ml for children (both mixed in a glass of water).
II. Contraindications for Ipecac Syrup
Do NOT use if the person is:
Allergic to any ingredient.
Swallowed harmful substances such as (SAAKGCFPC):
Strychnine
Alkali, Acid, Kerosene
Gasoline, Coal Oil, Fuel Oil, Paint Thinner, Cleaning Fluid
Already treated with activated charcoal.
Unconscious, semiconscious, very drowsy, severely intoxicated (drunk), or having seizures.
