Paper 1 outline
Paper One requires an analysis of a series of sources, from images to political cartoons, from excerpts from treaty documents, government communications, personal accounts, diaries/ journals, speeches, textbooks, etc. The sources will always provide you with the origin information. You are to then interpret the content and analyse for the purpose, value, and limitation, and apply that to a series of questions. You will always be given 5 sources. Of which one is often a political cartoon, the rest of print sources can include government public and private documents, and excerpts from key leaders (speeches, private letters, diaries) and public civilian sources (newspapers). You will be asked to use the majority in questions #1-3, but are then expected to comment on all of them (directly or indirectly) in #4. Reminder that this exam is only 1hr. Therefore your answers must be direct and to the point. Clear. Concise. Correct! For now write in bullet points for #1-3.
Will ask you two directed questions of the overall meaning or message of a particular source. This is focused on content understanding and interpretation of the key messages of the sources. Question i)-3 marks. Question ii)-2 marks.
Analyze the source for OPCVL. Have a paragraph for values and a paragraph for limitations. Evaluate the origin (Who, when and type of text), purpose (why?), and content (what is says). Question-4 marks.
You will be asked to compare and contrast two different sources regarding the overall topic of the paper. For example here, it would be the Treaty of Versailles. You must compare AND contrast. Keep the comparison and contrast as two separate paragraphs. This is focused only on content NOT OPVL. Question- 6 marks.
A long answer with a directed question that approaches the overall concept or question posed/ answered in all of the different sources. You are to use the sources AND outside information together to summarize the overall event/ concept and possibly critique it. You must use both the sources and your own knowledge and use them to support one another or conflict one another. A higher end answer will use all the sources (even if they weren’t in #1-3). A higher end answer will quote sources and then compare/contrast that information to additional sources, or other knowledge you have on the topic. It is consolidating all the skills of the previous questions, and your general knowledge on the topic. It is usually a topic that has some level of multiple perspectives to it. You need to write a few paragraphs. Question- 9 marks.
