Comprehensive Study Notes on Values Education and Human Aspirations
Defining Values
Values are individual beliefs that motivate people to act in specific ways. They serve as a foundational guide for human behavior. Typically, individuals are predisposed to adopt the specific values they were raised with.
A value denotes the degree of importance assigned to an object, action, or idea. The aim of identifying values is to determine which actions are best to perform, which way of living is ideal, and to describe the inherent significance of various actions. Consequently, values are considered essential to the study and practice of ethics.
Types of Values
There are several categories of values identified within the educational framework:
Human Values: Centered on the basic human value of "man in nature" rather than the exploitative view of "nature for man."
Social Values: These include love, compassion, tolerance, and justice. These are the basic teachings of most religions and should be woven into environmental education to nurture protection for all forms of life and biodiversity.
Cultural and Religious Values: These are often enshrined in ancient texts. For example, the Yajurveda emphasizes the principle of "you give me and I give you," highlighting that humans should not exploit nature without also nurturing her. Many cultural customs and rituals teach that aspects of nature—rivers, mountains, forests, and the earth itself—are sacred and should be protected.
Ethical Values: Environmental education should promote an earth-centric rather than a human-centric worldview. The goal is to foster "earth-citizenship" thinking where the welfare of the earth is prioritized over human supremacy.
Global Values: This concept views human civilization as a part of the planet as a whole. Natural phenomena are interconnected through bonds of harmony; disturbing this harmony results in ecological imbalance and catastrophic consequences.
Spiritual Values: These include principles such as self-restraint, self-discipline, contentment, reduction of wants, freedom from greed, and austerity.

Need, Scope, and Content of Value Education
Need for Value Education:
Correct identification of aspirations.
Understanding universal human values to fulfill aspirations in continuity.
Recognizing the complementarity of values and skills.
Evaluation of personal beliefs.
Balancing technology and human values.
Scope of Value Education:
Four Dimensions of the Individual: Thought (clarity vs. confusion), Behavior, Work, and Understanding/Realization.
Four Levels of Society: Individual, Family (seeking fearlessness/trust), Society, and Nature/Existence.
Content of Value Education:
Understanding the self, aspirations, and happiness.
Understanding the goal of human life.
Understanding other entities in nature, their interconnectedness, and the human role in nature.
Understanding harmony at the four levels of human living.
Self-Exploration
Self-exploration is defined as observing "inside" (what I am vs. what I really want to be), whereas regular exploration is observing "outside."
The Process of Self-Exploration: It is a discovery of the innate, invariant, and universal qualities in all human beings. It allows individuals to resolve internal contradictions and confusions by becoming aware of "Natural Acceptance."
The Purpose of Self-Exploration: It acts as a dialogue between "What I am" (Desires, Thoughts, Expectations) and "What I really want to be" (Natural Acceptance, Intention).
If "What I am" is in harmony with "Natural Acceptance," it leads to Happiness.
If "What I am" contradicts "Natural Acceptance," it leads to Unhappiness.
Living in Harmony:
Self-Organized: Living in accordance with Natural Acceptance and inner harmony.
Self-Expression: Living in harmony with others and the entire existence. This results in a "Universal Human Order."
Natural Acceptance and Realization
Natural Acceptance is:
Innate (not created).
Invariant with time, age, place, or individual.
Uncorrupted by likes, dislikes, assumptions, or beliefs.
Definite and involves unconditional acceptance of self, people, and environment.
Realization and Understanding: Self-exploration leads to the realization of existence and understanding of harmony. This state is:
Assuring: No doubts, based on intrinsic natural acceptance.
Satisfying: Fulfills the human need to know and understand.
Universal: Invariant across Time (past, present, future), Space (all locations), and Individual (all human beings).
Verification Process: A proposal should not be accepted just because it is in a book or stated by a person. It must be verified through Natural Acceptance and Experiential Validation (Behavior with humans leads to Mutual Happiness; Work with nature leads to Mutual Prosperity).
Basic Human Aspirations: Happiness and Prosperity
All human beings basically aspire for continuous happiness and prosperity.
Definitions:
Happiness: Being in harmony or synergy in the situations we live in; a state of liking.
Prosperity: The feeling of having more physical facilities than required. It creates a desire to share.
Wealth: A physical thing; having money or physical facilities.
Prevailing Notions of Failure at Four Levels:
Individual: Depression, psychological disorders, suicide, stress, loneliness.
Family: Breaking of joint families, mistrust, divorce, family feuds, wasteful expenditure.
Society: Terrorism, casteism, ethnic struggles, war, genocide.
Nature: Global warming, pollution, deforestation, loss of soil fertility.
Program for Fulfillment of Aspirations
To fulfill aspirations, three basic requirements are needed in a specific priority order:
Right Understanding: Using intelligence effectively to understand the self.
Relationships: Building interpersonal bonds at home and work (leads to Mutual Happiness).
Physical Facilities: Physiological needs and comforts (leads to Mutual Prosperity with nature).
Animal vs. Human Consciousness:
Animal Consciousness: Living solely for physical facilities. For animals, physical facilities are necessary and complete.
Human Consciousness: Living with Right Understanding, Relationships, and Physical Facilities. For humans, physical facilities are necessary but incomplete.
The Priority Order for Harmony:
Right Understanding (in the self).
Relationship (Trust/Respect with humans leading to Mutual Happiness).
Physical Facilities (with nature leading to Mutual Prosperity).
Defining Values
Types of Values
Sensitivity
Punctuality
Neatness
Scientific attitude
Dignity of labour
Sportsmanship
Equality
Brotherhood
Patriotism
Secularism
Cooperation
Tolerance
Respect for elders
Non-violence
National integrity
Universal brotherhood

Importance and Components of Value Education

Human Rights and the Process of Value Education
Process Characteristics of Value Education:
Methods of Adoption:Individualized Learning
Group Learning
Project Learning
Open Learning
Need, Scope, and Content of Value Education
Need for Value Education:
Scope of Value Education:
Four Dimensions of the Individual: Pag-iisip (kalinawan vs. kalituhan), Pag-uugali, Trabaho, at Pag-unawa/Pagtanto.
Four Levels of Society: Indibidwal, Pamilya (naghahanap ng walang takot/tiwala), Lipunan, at Kalikasan/Pag-iral.
Content of Value Education:
The Process of Self-Exploration:
The Purpose of Self-Exploration:
Natural Acceptance and Realization
Realization and Understanding:
Basic Human Aspirations: Happiness and Prosperity

The Priority Order for Harmony:
Right Understanding (sa sarili).
