Gather Series – Commissioned

Context & Purpose of the Message

  • Final sermon ("Commissioned") in the July Gather Series (previous weeks: Called – Covenanted – Committed).
  • Aimed to "land the plane" on why the church gathers:
    • Glory of God & good of neighbor.
    • Transition back to verse-by-verse study of Matthew next week.

Review of the Three Previous Themes

  • Called (July 6)
    • Two competing salvation narratives:
    • Cultural: “Everyone is on the way to heaven; only bad deeds can derail.”
    • Biblical: “Everyone is naturally on the way to hell; only God’s strong arm rescues.”
    • Prodigal vs. Older Brother (Luke 15)
    • Both need rescue; moralism cannot place God in one’s debt.
  • Covenanted (Scott)
    • God’s unbreakable, perfect covenants contrasted with human failure.
    • Historical sweep of covenants:
    1. Creation ("Befruitful")("Be fruitful …")
    2. Noachian ("neveragainfloodtheearth")("never again flood the earth")
    3. Abrahamic ("lighttothenations")("light to the nations")
    4. Mosaic (conditionalblessings/cursings)(conditional – blessings/cursings)
    5. Davidic (MessiahKingpromised)(Messiah-King promised)
    6. New Covenant – Ezekiel (36:26)(36:26) “new heart & spirit.”
  • Committed (John White)
    • Memorable one-liners:
    • “Lone-Ranger Christian” myth.
    • “Individualism feels like freedom but is actually isolation.”
    • Illustration: Lost hiker circling the trail = believer circling church without joining.
    • Only soul-nourishing community can cure spiritual dryness.

Theme 4 – Commissioned (Today)

  • Dictionary: Commission = responsibility passed to another.
  • Preacher’s personal oath of office (2003)(2003) as analogy: pledge allegiance to one kingdom.
  • Critical verse: Matthew (28:19)(28:19) “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”
    • God’s agenda / will for every believer.
    • Salvation = FROM sin AND TO Christ (new position = saint, new condition = free from bondage).

Four Responsibilities Under the Commission

1. Lean Into New Identity (Great Commandment fuels Great Commission)

  • Matthew (22:37)(22:37) – Imperative and indicative: “BE one who loves God wholly.”
  • Honest assessment: none of us “have this suitcased.”
    • Faith isn’t always smiling; often “barely hanging on.” (1 Peter (4:12)(4:12)).
  • Effort ≠ earning. Philippians (2:1213)(2:12–13): work out because God is at work.

2. Lean Into Biblical Love

  • Cultural love = radical acceptance plus radical approval (unconditional affirmation).
  • Biblical love = radical acceptance (grace) plus radical transformation ("come & die to self").
  • 1 Corinthians (13:48)(13:4–8) supplies think/act directives (patient, kind, keeps no record …).
  • John (13:35)(13:35): World knows disciples by this cross-shaped love.

3. Lean Into Personal Ministry (Every Saint a Minister)

  • Ephesians (4:7)(4:7) & 1 Peter (4:10)(4:10)each receives a gift → each serves.
  • Rebutting two lies:
    1. "Leave it to experts." (Historical priest vs. laity divide; Luther’s Reformation).
    2. "Wait for spiritual perfection." Matthew (28:1617)(28:16–17) – some disciples still doubted while commissioned.
  • Romans (15:14)(15:14) – believers are competent to "counsel/admonish." Everyone who has ever given moral guidance is, in fact, a counselor.

4. Share the Message of Reconciliation

  • 2 Corinthians (5:1719)(5:17–19) – new creation → entrusted with evangelism.
  • Woman at the Well (John 4) as model:
    • Her weakness became her message (“Come see the man who told me everything …”).
    • Principle: “Your struggle becomes your mission.”
  • Practical encouragement:
    • Use everyday settings (e.g., grocery store) as evangelism trips.
    • Spiritual stagnation? → Tell someone about Jesus this week.

Key Illustrations & Metaphors

  • Military oath vs. Kingdom allegiance.
  • "Jesus isn’t one priority on the list; He’s the notepad." He permeates all categories: family, work, leisure.
  • Lost hiker = believer refusing church commitment.
  • HB (grocery) evangelist: mundane questions → eternal questions.
  • Back-row Baptists & undercover Southern Baptists: humorous call-outs to congregation.

Ethical / Philosophical Implications

  • Individualism’s promise of freedom produces isolation.
  • Cultural mandate of unconditional approval conflicts with biblical call to transformation.
  • Christian love is anchored in Christ’s character, not recipient’s worthiness.

Practical Take-Aways & Applications

  • Measure spiritual dryness: check commitment to faith family.
  • Replace “follow your heart” with scriptural guidance.
  • Admit doubts while obeying; doubt does not disqualify mission.
  • Evangelism starter kit:
    1. Share your weakness and Christ’s strength.
    2. Ask simple, direct questions about eternity.
    3. Invite into community, not merely to a building.

Quotable Lines

  • "Individualism feels like freedom, but it’s actually isolation."
  • “Faith is a myth if it’s always smiling.”
  • “Jesus oozes out and governs every part of life.”
  • “Your position is saint; act like your position.”
  • “Set apart to go, boasting in your weakness.”
