Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium

HWE Rules

  1. Always start with the homozygous recessive individuals, they represent q2
  2.  Take the square root of q2 to find q. Then calculate p.
  3. If you are NOT given a # for the homozygous recessive individuals, you have to count alleles.
  4. Remember: each organism has 2 alleles, so in a population of 30 individuals there are 60 alleles.

To make sure HWE works you need

  1. No Natural Selection

  2. No Mutation

  3. No Migration

  4. Large Population

  5. Random Mating

Equations

Allele Frequency:

p + q = 1

p: Dominant allele frequency

q: Recessive allele frequency

\n

Genotype Frequency:

p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1

P2: Homogzogous Dominant (BB)

2pq: Heterozygous (Bb)

q2: Homozygous Recessive (bb)
