Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium
HWE Rules:
- Always start with the homozygous recessive individuals, they represent q2
- Take the square root of q2 to find q. Then calculate p.
- If you are NOT given a # for the homozygous recessive individuals, you have to count alleles.
- Remember: each organism has 2 alleles, so in a population of 30 individuals there are 60 alleles.
To make sure HWE works you need
No Natural Selection
No Mutation
No Migration
Large Population
Random Mating

Equations
Allele Frequency:
p + q = 1
p: Dominant allele frequency
q: Recessive allele frequency
\n
Genotype Frequency:
p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1
P2: Homogzogous Dominant (BB)
2pq: Heterozygous (Bb)
q2: Homozygous Recessive (bb)
