The author uses personification by describing the warthog with human characteristics such as suspicious, gallant, and courageous. These words give animals, human character qualities, which forms an emotional connection with the reader. These word choices show the warthog as a strong defender of family and home. Personification helps the reader understand and relate to nonhuman characters, sets a mood, and evokes emotion.
