The Skeletal System main functions
Support-
1)rigid bone frame
2)supports soft tissues like skin and muscles.
Posture-
1) correct shape.
2)maintain good posture which is essential for sports.
3) E.g. aids performance in gymnastics.
Protection-
1)Tough bones- protect vital organs like brain, heart and lungs.
2)allows good performance without fear of injury.
3) E.g. skull protects brain, so you can head a football or take punches in boxing without serious injury.
Movement-
1) Muscles, attached to bones by tendons, move bones at joints.
2) Movement is essential for performance in sport.
3) type of movement at joints is important.
Making Blood Cells-
1) bones contain bone marrow, makes red blood cells.
2) red blood cells important- transport oxygen to muscles.
3) Athletes with more Red Blood Cells perform better-moge oxygen can be delivered to muscles.
Mineral storage-
1) Bones store minerals like calcium and phosphorous.
2) help with bone strength- less likely to break bone.
3) needed for muscle contraction- so body can move.
